PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination is the act of postponing, delaying or putting off, especially habitually or intentionally.
Procrastination is the enemy of our present activity. It is a form of stress relief. Procrastination makes us leave works and schedules unfinished. Procrastination is a habit we possess every day, we can’t get fully rid of that habit, we can only avoid it. We have lots of works waiting on our desk, we have daily schedule that should be finished but we procrastinate and the day goes by and nothing has been done. Everyone is/has or will procrastinate on something in life, today, sometime or soon. Nobody is an exemption unless one avoids it. It is a habit that can’t be stopped but avoided. Note: It is a habit not a Job. We have the habit of procrastinating but we are not procrastinators.

HOW DO WE PROCRASTINATE?
WE DO THE IRRELEVANT THINGS INSTEAD.
We have  a job to be done but we say ” I’ll start in the next 10 minutes, its already 10 minutes away, I am really enjoying this game or movie, I will stop in the next 20 minutes,  30miuntes has gone by, 5hours has gone by you are still on it and you say, oh!  I couldn’t get this done today; I will have to do it tomorrow”.  Tomorrow comes and you still didn’t do it. It’s past a month and we put it aside because the zeal we had for it has died. Same thing goes to our New Year resolutions; we fully entertain the habit of procrastinating. And a year goes by; we still remain the same as the previous year, not even a slight difference. And we make others the object of our frustration.  In sociology one way to handle our frustration is making someone the object of your frustration by faulting others for it. You are only struggling with procrastination.

WE WAIT FOR AN EXTERNAL FORCE.
You have a goal but you relax and wait for someone to inspire you, waiting for someone to push you, waiting for bad circumstances to push you. You want to see the devil before you know you should worship God. You are waiting for information, waiting for a force. Quit waiting because no one is coming, no force is coming. The only force you need is an internal force which is you. Everyone has an internal fill tank; it is neither empty nor full.

HOW TO AVOID PROCRASTINATION
SET PRIORITIES.
Most times we procrastinate because it is not important, it is not urgent especially when there is no deadline. If you make it a priority you wouldn’t want to compromise it for anything else. Make it a goal you have to reach. Most times we make it a goal but we still don’t reach it, that’s because we try to manage time. You cannot manage time you can only manage time in your life. Focus on the things that will have a beneficial impact on your life.

  BEGIN THE ZEIGARNIK EFFECT.
This is the tendency to remember an uncompleted task rather than a completed one. When you remember the uncompleted task, you would be restless until it is completed.

THINK ABOUT THE REWARDS.
Whenever you want to procrastinate always think about the reward, how much it will fetch you in weeks, how much fame and honor it will reward you with. When you think of what comes with it and you get done with the task you have succeeded in avoiding procrastination.

ACKNOWLEDGE THE STRESS.
It is stressful but do it anyways. Most people procrastinate because it is too stressful. It is less stressful when you eat the ugliest frog first. Get rid of the panic monster. Be a rational decision maker. When you write out your schedule, start with the biggest task, and you don’t feel the stress too much. If you start with the smallest task, you see yourself carrying that biggest task to the next day and most times it continues on and on.

PLAN EACH DAY IN ADVANCE.
When you plan your day in advance, you already know the first task to be done in the morning. And you sleep thinking of the fastest way to get done with it. It also helps you not to lazy about doing nothing because you have a work to be done.

OTHER WAYS TO AVOID PROCRASTINATION
  Tune into your why.
•   When you exhibit self compassion you are more likely to finish your  tasks.
Parent yourself.
Home your skills.
  Don’t make excuses.
Start a ritual. Something that pushes you.
Look at the consequences of doing or not doing it.
